Foster care exists to give children what every child deserves – a safe, stable, and loving home. Sometimes, through no fault of their own, a child’s family can’t provide that security. In these cases, the State steps in to find a temporary or long‑term foster home that’s in the child’s best interest.
In this Inside Origins episode, Majella, one of our experienced team members, shares what foster care means, how the matching process works, and why support for both children and carers is at the heart of everything we do.
Foster care is more than opening your home – it’s opening your heart. As Majella explains:
“Foster care is offering a child or children a safe environment that provides stability, consistency, and predictable parenting.”
Children come into care for many different reasons, but one thing is always the same: their previous circumstances weren’t safe or stable enough to meet their needs. Whatever the situation, the goal is simple – to provide a nurturing space where a child feels safe, supported, and cared for while plans for their long‑term future are made.
One of the most important parts of fostering is making sure each child is placed with the right family:
“The matching process is very important. We do our best to match the children with the most competent foster carers that we have.”
At Origins, we work closely with social workers to gather as much information as possible before making a placement. Sometimes, though, not every detail is known upfront. That’s why ongoing support is so vital – for both the child and the carers.
Foster care isn’t just about providing a roof over a child’s head – it’s about helping them heal, grow, and thrive. Majella highlights how Origins creates the right environment for this:
“We support families and the foster carers to support this child, to manage (...) emotions and through intervention and through evidence‑based practice and research, we provide space for these children to develop… and to have the opportunity to reach their full potential.”
With trauma‑informed training, smaller caseloads, and 24/7 access to dedicated Link Workers, Origins make sure carers never feel like they’re doing this alone.
At its heart, foster care comes down to one simple question, as Majella puts it:
“You need to think about: Can you give a child a loving home?”
If the answer to that question is yes, now might be the time to explore fostering in more detail. At Origins Foster Care, we walk alongside you every step of the way – from your first enquiry to your first placement and beyond.
